Cambrian Tapestry is a generative artwork: instead of being one fixed image, it is an effectively endless visual world that can be explored by moving and zooming.
The underlying system combines shapes, colors, symmetry, contrast, and varying levels of detail. Each view is generated from that system. The work is not a fractal, although it shares the idea of exploring a large space of visual variation. It is closer to a procedurally generated landscape in a game, but made for looking rather than for reaching a destination.
The title refers loosely to the Cambrian explosion, a period associated with a rapid diversification of forms. The project asks whether a system can keep producing novel and visually engaging places without being directed toward one predetermined result.
These approaches can overlap. A form that initially seems abstract may become recognizable on a second look, while a recognizable motif may fade back into pattern as the view changes.
Cambrian Tapestry is designed to leave room for interpretation. Its use of symmetry, rounded forms, gradients, and layered contours can invite associations, but those associations are not hidden answers to be found. What one viewer notices may differ from what another notices, or from what the developer notices.
This makes looking an active part of the work. The system provides the visual material; your movement, framing, attention, and interpretation help shape the experience.
Cambrian Tapestry is an evolving prototype. The interface and experimental features may change as the project develops.
Drag to move through the artwork. Scroll or pinch to zoom in and out.
There is no correct route, goal, or final view. You can linger with a detail, travel until something catches your attention, or return to a view from a different scale. Zoom changes the character of the experience: closer views reveal individual shapes and details, while wider views reveal more relationships at once.
Open Colors to choose a named preset or create a custom color scheme. Changing colors does not alter the underlying location, but it can change which patterns, contrasts, and relationships stand out.
Open Bookmarks to explore examples or save discoveries of your own. A bookmark saves the current location and color settings so you can return to the same view later.
Quality lets you trade rendering detail for speed. Automatic is recommended for most devices. Fullscreen gives the artwork more room and may improve performance on some devices.
Use Screenshot to save the current artwork as an image. Import and Export provide ways to save or restore views and settings. These features are experimental and may change as the project develops.
On a desktop keyboard, use the Up and Down arrow keys or +, =, and - to zoom. Use Left and Right to cycle through named color presets. Press B to save a bookmark with a suggested name, or S to save a screenshot with a suggested filename.
Advanced features are experimental tools for changing parts of the Tapestry beyond the normal exploration controls.
They may be incomplete, change over time, affect performance, or produce less predictable results. They are not needed for ordinary exploration.
Use the toggle below to enable advanced features. When enabled, the additional controls become available alongside the normal controls. You can turn them off again at any time.
Warning: Advanced features are experimental. They may affect performance and may change or disappear in a future version.
